1991-2: Mitsu 1.5 SOHC 8-valve engine. Engine reliable. Auto trans crap.
Expect many squeaks and rattles. Most problems other than trans will be
    electrical.

1993-5: Hyundai 1.5 Alpha SOHC 12-valve engine. Noisier and more
vibration than Mitsu 1.5. Have seen a few very minor head gasket leaks on
early models. Auto trans a little better than crap. Expect the squeaks
and rattles. Most problems will likely be electrical.

Check the reliability ratings on this site:

    http://www.partsamerica.
    com/PPF/SourceArea/LEARN/DestinationPage/ReliabilityRatings.
    asp/ReliabilityRatings.asp

They are from the same company supplying the ratings on the MSN Autos, but for
some unknown reason, Scoupe is not listed on the MSN site.

Engine reliable? Not really. It's the same engine used in the 2nd-generation
Excel. Check the ratings on the MSN Auto.

Auto trans crap? below average, but certainly not crap.
The Alpha engine is definitely not noisier than the Orion engine.
Auto trans a little better? How is that possible if it's cheaper than the one
used in the '91-92 car? :D

The Mitsu 1.5 had few major problems that I can recall. I can't think of a
chronic failure beyond self-loosening rocker shaft bolts. Any tranmission
which has a significant failure rate in the first 50k miles is crap. I
own a 1992 Ford Taurus, which as we all know (hopefully) has a crap
transmission. The 91-92 Scoupe transmissions fail more frequently than
    the Taurus transmissions.

There is not necessarily any correlation between price and quality. A
better design can be simpler, less expensive, and more reliable all at the
same time. The Hyundai engineers had already decided that the trans was
crap in the earlier version; that's one reason for the change. Hyundai
designed the trans in the 93-95 Scoupe with an additional friction and
metal (I believe on each clutch) to help reduce failure rates.

Since the Scoupe and Excel have the same engine and trans except for gear
ratio in 1992, I'm wondering why the ratings are so different. Any
transmission which I can recall replacing numerous times within the first
30k miles is crap. I'd put the average lifespan of the 91-92 Scoupe auto
trans at about 50k miles. In contrast, I'd put the average lifespan of
the 93-95 Scoupe auto trans at about 90k miles.
