What sort of problems have you seen specific to the transmission with the
automatic/2.7L engine combination (as in the Sonata, to be exact).

    Estimated lifespan of this transmission?

    TIA

Mostly input/output speed sensors and range switches. Very few internal
problems. I left Hyundai shortly after this tranny came out and the
dealer at which I work has only had Hyundai for about a year and a half,
so I haven't seen too many of the higher mileage cars. One of my Hyundai
tech cronies reported some major failures in the 60k to 70k range, but I
haven't seen this. Unfortunately, I haven't seen enough major tranny
issues with this trans to give you a lifespan prediction. (And that's a
    good thing).

    OK, thanks.

Please do me and the other followers of the group a favor and report back if
you happen to see one come in-

I didn't mean to imply that none have come in. In various vehicles, I
think there have been about 5 of the design transmission to which you are
referring replaced at my dealer in the past year. They've all been within
the warranty period, there's been no single issue that stands out as a
problem, and they've been at largely varying mileages between a few
thousand and 70k. Comparing with the number of vehicles we service, I
view these transmission replacements as anomalies and not indicative of
    the normal expected lifetime.

I have a 2002 Sonata LX and have had transmission issues since day one.
Erratic shifting from 2nd to 3rd mostly, but some times from 1st to 2nd.
I've taken it to the deal repeatedly, but they can never duplicate the
    issue.
The ECM was updated because of shifting problems reported in a tech
bulletin, but this didn't resolve the issue.
I now have 70,000 miles on the car and the transmission doesn't move in
reverse or drive after the car sits overnight.
The dealer was supposed to keep the car for a week, but instead called the
first day and said that they wanted to change the fluid and if I had any
    problems
after that I could bring it back in. Needles to say it's worse now then it
was before and when the car does move the flair from 2nd to 3rd is very
    noticeable.
It goes back to them on Monday, but I'm very skeptical as to them addressing
    the problem.
    Any advice?
