I've posed this question before, but didn't get any takers.

I've got a 2003 Tib. I know the original CD/AM/FM radio is marginal at
best. In my particular case, the AM reception is the real bugaboo.
What I'm curious about is this: is it the radio, or the antenna?

The reason I ask is that I'm thinking of getting an after-market unit,
such as a Kenwood. But, I don't want to spend the bucks if the antenna,
or its routing, is the real problem.

    Got any ideas?

    Many thanks.

If the antenna is stock then it is likely the head unit. Antennae are
electronically tuned to head units so if it is a replacemeat antenna there
is a good chance that it would not be as good as the factory antenna.

That said as far as I know there is a difference in requirement between AM
and FM antennae so manufacturers (esp. of cheaper radios) are often faced
    with compromising on antennae.

Good luck in getting a good AM-capable radio.

Yes, Wayne, the antenna is indeed the stock unit that came on the car.

Most folks have abandoned AM radio in favor of the crap on FM that
passes for music these days, or CD's. I like to listen to talk radio,
and it is almost NEVER on FM. And, I happen to like cassettes--I can
make them so easily, without the use of a PC; and, they're a lot more
compact than CD's. One can stick several in jacket pockets.

So, I will be looking for an AM/FM/CD/Cassette unit. I think Kenwood
makes one for the 2003 Tib.

I had a Kenwood head unit put in my Tempo years and years ago, and if the
new Kenwood you are looking at is anything like that, you will be very pleased.
I have always been partial to Kenwood car stereo units, especially since
    then.

It’ll take some work to figure out where the issue is. Usually,
    however, it’s the radio itself.

If you do determine it’s the radio, make certain to purchase a unit
that has good reception where you want it. Check around and speak to
people who know about that sort of thing
