I just got done negotiating a new Sonata GLS. It has the package 2
options. The total price, out the door, came to 17,784.94.
Does this seem like a good price for this vehicle?

That's a good price. What is your sales tax rate? I bought an LX with no
options for $17,858 out the door. (8.25% sales tax in my area). about the
same deal considering you got some options. I'd say we both did well. I'm
happy! with the price and with the car.

    Hi Bob,
Actually you got the better deal since the LX is a step up from my
GLS. But, the price I got was the very best I could get here in
Michigan. The general sales tax here is 6%, but I think it's different
for new cars, I think it's more. I don't finalize the deal until
tomorrow, so I'll know for sure then. Mine doesn't have the power
seats, moon roof of the leather like yours does, but it's still a
sharp, excellent handling car. And yours has the climate control, I
believe, while mine is a manual air conditioner. So it looks like you
got a much better price than I did, but I'm still very happy with the
price and car. Considering my last new car was a Saturn LS2, in 2000,
and it cost $21,000!! And this is the reason I finally gave up on
American cars. I paid top dollar (at 8% interest!!) for a car I
THOUGHT was good quality. Nothing could be further from the truth.
After Saturn's pathetic 32,000 mile warranty ran out, I have had to
replace the air conditioning compressor, the alternator, a strut
mount, and a power window motor. And this car still only has 75,000
miles on it. The parts for that Saturn are very expensive also. My car
before that, also new, was a 1996 Buick. At about 45,000 miles, a
power window motor went out on that also. And there were other
problems with it, the final straw being the transmission about to go
out when I traded it in. So this is my first foreign car. It's
politically incorrect to be driving a foreign car here in the Detroit
area, but I'm sick of these quality issues with the American cars.
Hell, half the parts (or more?) aren't even made in the USA anyway. I
just really like this Sonata, and with this warranty, price and
quality feel, it's a hard car to beat. Hopefully I'll have better luck
with this car than with my last two new cars,

Please pardon my barging into the conversation; it's of interest.
I, too, looked at Saturn awhile back. Base unit: very economical. Car you
    would want: got expensive fast.
The GM approach: Advertise heavily, finance/rebate aggressively, recall
if/when/as necessary. Until then, charge through the ying-yang for parts
    and service.
Personally, I'm done with them. (And Ford.)
    Only 1 of the 4? You're lucky :)
My brother was not so fortunate with his Buick.
It isn't "luck", of course. I have a 2003 Elantra GT hatchback, and it's
the most fun car (I'm since my old 1960 MGA (and MUCH more practical :)
Quality-wise: 14 months with NO noteworthy problems.

As for 'political correctness' -- Oh, please.....Buy what you really want.
    It's a global economy; don't let Washington's pseudo-patriotism schtick
    compromise your interests.
My next car: Another GT, or maybe a Sonata.

    Happy shifting,
    DW

I think you're gonna love your new Sonata. I've had a grin on my face since
I picked mine up about 6 weeks ago. Have fun and give us an update after you
get the car. What color? I chose slate grey.

Does this out the door price include rebates, such as the $2000 rebate
    currently offered?

Your prices both seem to be below what I'm finding to be "dealer invoice".
I just bought in Iowa and the dealer seemed pretty inflexible towards the
price, I didn't offer to walk away from the deal or anything, but he
didn't come down much from the MSRP.

Also, about Bob's 8.25% sales tax, in our area it's also very high but the
tax rate on cars is much less everyday items.

Hi, Yes, my out the door price was with the rebate. It also included
new plates (not transferred ones) taxes and everything. I put down
$2784.94 and financed $15,000 at 3.74%. It was a pretty straight
forward deal. I offered $17,500 to two seperate dealers and the
clostest I could get was the $17,784.94 price.

Yes, includes $2,000 rebate. I bought from carsdirect.com. Go to their site
and they'll instantly give you a price. I think it would be hard to beat
their price at a dealership but you maybe could if you like to haggle. I
don't. The whole carsdirect.com process took about 20 minutes. They called
me up said they found the car I want at the price they quoted and told me
where to pick it up. What a pleasure compared to the typical day long ordeal
    at a dealership!

I just bought a 2004 base model Sonata with automatic transmission..
The sticker was exactly $17,500 which included mud guards and a cargo
    net, the only options.

I got $2,000 off as a regular rebate plus an additional $1,000 for a
special "Owner Loyalty" rebate (for being a previous/current Hyunda
owner) plus a $1,300 dealer discount.

The discount and rebates reduced the price to $13,200 plus I paid 6%
sales tax and $125 for license and clerical fees to make the drive
    away price $14,142.

I never priced any of the better model Sonatas so I really don't know
what the MSRP might have been on your car but you can make your own
    judgment.
