Anyone have a problem with a cracked exhaust manifold. 1997 Elantra - the
dealer says it's very common for the exhaust manifold to crack due to
heating and cooling. Wants $500 to change it.

Anyone ever change one- looks pretty simple at first glance.

Got a good source for parts?

Yeah it is easy. You can usually go to a junk yard and get one for less
than $100. Go to http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/default.asp and read up
on your car. Select your year, model and engine and then click SHOP.

  3. It CAN be easy, since it's a mechanically simple procedure, but on an
older car, removing the nuts/bolts that secure the manifold to the
cylinder head and exhaust downpipe can be a bear. If you can find a used
manifold at a junkyard, it might be worth it to have a local repair shop
install it, or at least have one available as a backup. They'll have the
equipment to deal with stripped nuts or studs, should that be a problem.

For the $500 the dealer wants, you could put a header on it and have
    some fun! ;-)

Common Problem? I have owned several cars, and never had this happen. No
one I know off-hand has had this problem either.
