I am comparison shopping of 2005 Santa Fe (GLS 2.7L V6 4SpdAT) vs.
Honda CRV EX-L(2.4IL4 AT 5-Spd) with CRV costing Candian C$6000 more
for cash deal in Calgary, Canada.

I know that Santa Fe would probably burn more fuel than CRV would
    (C$1/L; 20000KM/yr; 65/35 City/Hiway resulting in C$400 more).

I would like to get more info on the depreciation between them, as I am
getting some very different values of used vehicles from some popular
    data sources.

    1. From Cdn Red Book (2005 July), SF is retaining its value as good as
    CRV

    SF GLS 2004 2003
    New 30195 29850
    WholeSale 21225 17425
    Retail (West Cdn) 24125 (80%) 20325 (68%) Depreciates
    20/30%

    CRV EX-L 2004 2003
    New 33250 32400
    WholeSale 24825 20575
    Retail (West Cdn) 27725 (83%) 23475 (72%) Depreciates
    17/28%

    2. From Phil Edmonston's Lemon-Aid SUV.. 2005 (32 Anniversary Edition),
SF depreciates rather badly comparing to CRV.

    SF GLS 2004 2003
    New 30195 29950
    Used GLS Hi 24500 (81%) 20000 (67%)
    Used GLS Lo 23500 (78%) 18000 (60%)
    Avg 79.5% 63.5% Depreciates 20%
    annually

    CRV Base (LX?) 2004 2003
    New 27200 27300
    Used Base Hi 25000 (92%) 23000 (84.3%)
    Used Base Lo 23000 (85%) 21000 (77%)
    Avg 88.5% 80.65% Depreciates 10%
    annually

Q Wondering what set of numbers are more realistic to use?

Would also appreciate comments/suggestions in this regard.

    Thanks.

I have now also located Cdn Black Book thru Toyota.ca site from which
the SF/CRV price depreciations are fairly in line to those of the Red
Book, and not in large differences as set out by Phil Edmonston.

Here in america , the depreciation seems to be more. I think until
Hyundai has fully proven itself to be a reliable car (in the consumers
eyes) and has gotton over thier devastating stigma of the late 1980's
to 1990's, they will continue to suffer hefty depreciation. The plus
side, is, they are alot of value for the money and are becoming highly
favored especially in the small SUV market.

Funny thing is, I remember back in the '70s when Hondas pretty much
sucked. Eventually, automotive writers will get over their snobbish
attitudes concerning Hyundai, and then Toyota and Honda will be
    scrambling to keep market share.
