2004 Sonata Shiftronic - logic bug?

    dear AAH-

I found an odd behavior on our 04 Sonata V6. Here's the scenario-

Drive with cruise on and set in D (drive)

Select Shiftronic mode (move lever right)

Downshift (in my case I was going up hill, and went from 4 to 3)

While still in the lower gear, move lever back to D (drive) (I'd
crested the hill, and didn't need a low gear anymore).

    <<>>

Now you'd expect the tranny to know that the load is reduced and pick
the optimal gear like normal (it was flat, I was doing about 60mph),
so it should go back to 4th. It didn't. It stayed in 3rd, even tho
I was in Drive. I had to go back to Shiftronic, up to 4, then back
    over.

Anyone duplicate this? Is there a logic upgrade for the tranny that
might influence this behaviour? Should I contact Hyundai USA?

    Thanks everyone!

Never heard of it. Have it checked by the dealer. If there is a logic
bug, Hyundai will need to develop a solution. Contacting Hyundai will do
little more than put your problem/situation to a dealer's attention.

My XG300 does something very similar in the mountains here in BC. What I've
found is that if you leave it alone long enough, it seems to sort itself
out. Also if you crest a hill top & throttle back going down the other side
it may stay in a lower gear for speed control.

The transmission computers in these vehicles will observe your driving
patterns. If they determine you tend to apply the brake going downhill,
they will downshift to assist the braking.

I have two 4cyl. 2004 Sonatas and as near as I can tell, when you move
the shift lever from Shiftronic to Drive, the transmission assumes the
gear it would have been in had you never selected Shiftronic.

Of course, this does not mean it will shift at all at the moment you
move the lever from Shiftronic to Drive. It just means it will be in
the same gear it would have been had you never selected Shiftronic.
This may or may not involve a shift at the moment you move the lever
    from Shiftronic to Drive.
