Elantra 2000, what type of oil should I use? Supposedly there are
synthetic types for older engines. What's best?

Regular motor oil which meets current standards is fine. Be sure to
purchase a name brand motor oil. You can purchase synthetic if you
desire, but if the car has been run on regular oil, the high detergent
level may clean out some gunk helping to seal gaskets and cause leaks.
IMO, the "high mileage" oils are nothing more than a marketing gimmick to
separate you from more of your money.

I would recommend a synthetic blend oil if you are looking for a better
lubricant. Stay away from pure synthetic unles you want leaks everywhere!
The engin is used to the detergent additives and a switch after 50k miles is
    unwise with this in mind.
    Good Luck

  4. I bought an XG350 with 12,000 miles on it, switched to mobil one, and have
had no leaks. The car now has 20,000 on it. Sits in the driveway, and not a
    drop from a leak.
