Three out of the fouir steel wheels on my 2002 Elantra GLS have in excess of
..040" lateral run-out as verified on a freshly calibrated Hunter GSP 9700.
I bought the car, used, from a Hyundai dealer with only 15K miles on the OD.
The car is great except that I cannot eliminate the slight steering wheel
    shimmy at 70 - 75 MPH.

The Service Manager has arranged for me to meet with the district Hyundai in
December and suggested that he may authorize replacement of the wheels after
driving the car with me. Service would cover them for me up to 12K. They
will even give me a break on the price of the new wheels if I am forced to
    actually buy them.

The Service Manager has stated that, from his experience, the majority of
the steel wheels fall well with-in factory specs - which are available at
    http://www.hmaservice.com/.

    Questions:

Has anyone else had similar problems?
Would I be better off buying "aftermarket" chrome steel or alloy wheels?
Is it possible to get a "good" set of alloys form a salvage yard? The
lateral & radial wheel tolerances are much smaller on the Hyundai alloys.

FYI - My wife's '02 Elantra GLS, which we bought at the same time as mine,
turned out mighty fine with a four wheel alignment and a Road Force
balancing performed on a GSP 9700. For anyone that is not familiar with
this unit please see this link
    http://www.tiremartpa.com/GSP 9700 Features.htm
or to fine company that uses one near you see

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Looking for perfect balance.

  3. I have a 2002 Elantra and the tires and rims were replaced. Same reason .
Vibration at 60-70 mph range. It happened around 25000 miles. I bought this
car new. Then they replaced the tires only again because the problem
persisted. I've accepted the fact that the I got what I paid for. Hyundai is
great for not admitting things. Like vibrations, premature parts wear, bad
transmissions . Poor quality in general. I would buy rims from somewhere
other than Hyundai manufacturing. Just my opinion. Who knows of a dealer who
will back their cars 100%? Next time I buy from them.

I've got something similar going on with my son's '00 Accent. I replaced
the stock 13" wheels with 15" steel Saturn wheels and 195/50/15 tires.
Since doing that we've got a vibration/shimmy/road noise? at speeds above 60
    mph.

The steering wheel doesn't shake but the vibration is sufficient that it's
uncomfortable to rest one's head on the metal door frame. This MAY simply
be due to the agressive tread pattern on the tires. I've done a visual on
the car from another car on the interstate at 70 mph and none of the tires
    are bouncing.

Thanks for the information on the GSP 9700. My dealer is listed as having
that machine. I think I'll take the car in and have him check the lateral
run-out on the wheels just to be on the safe side

I think about the Hyundai cars my son's have owned - '94 Scoupe & '00
    Accent.

Then I think about some of the ones I've owned - Ford Tempo, Fiat Strada,
    Opel, VW Bug.

The Hyundai's look really good in comparison.
